Hi there! Today we'll talk about the first 3 books of the Young Samurai series(The "way" arc), a teenage book series .Although I'm not in my teen years, the books are not that bad because they talk about Japan's story and I learnt quite a lot of words.I think I'll comment the three of them together because it would be a pain to do it in a neat and tidy way, to be honest XD. Let's go(Spoilers ahead!)!
The story begins when a young english boy, whose ship shipwrecks, is almost killed by a group of ninjas led by someone called Dragon eye. After that he is rescued by a samurai called Masamoto Takeshi, one of the strongest of the world , and after spending some time learning the japanese language he is enrolled in the school that Masamoto has. That school train people to be samurais and to be more accurate they train to be proficient with a sword style called "Two Heavens" . This style has this name because you use two swords( A katana and a wakizaki(I know that it's nont written like this...XD)) to fight.
Apart from all the sword training they also train in hand to hand combat, judo, archery, fighting with a bo(It's seems that is something like a baton but with a sharp edge . It's made of wood) and even philosophy, something they say is very important.
The story itself doesn't have a lot of action until the third book. Most of the events that happen are tournaments with other schools and fights between members of Jack's school because Jack is not Japanese. This fights are the result of a political campaign launched by a certain sector of the daimyos that leads to a war in the third book between those in favor of the emperor(Who is Christian) and those against him(Because they think that Japan should be a land without "gaijin"(People from other countries) (Apart from all the thing about getting all the power)).
The war ends and thus people start to chase Jack in order to kill him. That's pretty much the end of the third book and the end of "the way" arc.
The books are not very difficult to read(They are aimed to teenage readers) but they manage to catch your attention and be interesting.
You learn quite a lot of Japanese words and about several other aspects of Japanese culture in the middle aged period ,information that it's quite interesting.
I reccommend you to read this book if you are interested in Japanese culture or if you want an easy book to practice your reading skills in english.
