Hi there! As I promised , here is the second post of the week. In this post I'm going to talk about different mangas that picture survival in one form or another. Basically, in these kind of mangas you can find people struggling to find food/water/other things in hostile environments in order to survive because there had been some kind of catastrophe or because they were thrown away in the middle of the ocean. Let's go!
It's a story with a lot of drama cause even of the people of the island seem to be happy now you can't tell whether they will continue living or if they will kill themselves. As the manga progresses you can grasp the point of why are they there, I won't say here because it's a major spoiler but I'll give you a clue: they are not on the island by chance.
-B-toom: this manga is kind of similar to the video game bomberman if you think about it , and not just for the title. The story in this manga is about a certain video game called b-toom (A massive one ) where the players have BIMs(somthing similar to bombs) and they have to kill each other . The main character of the manga is one of the best players in the world so he doesn't realize but the truth is that he is part of something. He finally realized when he wakes up in an island and figures out that the has to play b-toom in real life. It seems that he has to get 8 jewels, one for each person, to get out. In order to do this, he has to kill the person , so he decides that he will not kill anyone .
That's pretty much the synopsis. The main character later realizes that he is there because someone nominated him, and it's same for all the other people in the island.
It's a manga that has a lot of action in it but it's not the kind of action tat you could find in mainstream manga, this is special because characters combine their mind and their strength to win their battles by throwing different kind of bombs at each other. It has an anime now , proof that is very popular so go ahead and read it!
-Cage of eden: I haven't read it yet so I'll put here the plot that is in BakaUpdates:
Akira and his
classmates are travelling on a plane when it crashes onto an island
inhabited by species thought to have been extinct. The situation
becomes increasingly desperate as some of Akira's classmates are eaten
alive, while some kill others in desperation. Now Akira and a few other
survivors are trying to survive what seems to be a horrible nightmare.
-51 ways to save my girlfriend: this manga is about a couple that has to survive in Tokyo after a huge earthquake that has destroyed the city and has killed a lot of people. Apart from that, communications are impossible so one of the main parts of the plot is find a way to communicate without using technology.
Apart from that, the manga tells us the story of a couple of people. The girl is a gothic lolita(she is kind of old for that and people mess with her a lot because of that) and the guy is someone who wants to be successful in life. They met each other after a long time right before the beginning of the earthquake so they decide to be together to find help. This manga is VERY realistic, there's a lot of scenes of people dying in the streets and there's even a scene where the main character can't help but cry after having to leave someone in a building that was about to collapse even after having promised to not do so...This is a story about how real people would act in that kind of situation. Would they be polite or would they be like beast? Mostly the second if you read the manga. This is a great manga, even if the drawings aren't that good.
-Battle royale: from the same mangala that 51 ways to save my girlfriend, this manga is the main inspiration of the hunger games. To be honest, this is way better: the plot is made to be fit in a seinen manga and there's a lot of violence. Here is the synopsis from BakaUpdates:
In the future, random Jr. High School classes are chosen to compete in a game called Battle Royale. The rules: only one student can survive after 3 days on an island or else they all perish. Weapons are handed out and each student is sent out into the field alone and unprepared for the horror that awaits them. The classmates turn upon themselves in a battle for survival, treaties are made and broken, and former friends become foes as the relentless countdown continues. Amid the betrayals and rising body count, two classmates confess their love for each other and swear to survive this deadly game together.
- Let's lagoon: this is good! This manga have surprised me a lot because when you start to read it you don't expect what happens after a few chapters. You could think is a typical survival manga where the main characters have to survive in an uninhabited island. Well, that's part of the plot but the island seems to be in a place where ships can't reach(Bermudas triangle?) and there seems to be some kind of time paradox which allows people to travel in time. Awesome.
-Dragon head: I haven't read yet, here is the synopsis from Baka updates:
In the horror of witnessing so many classmates perish before his eyes in a violent train wreck, Teru discovers two survivors in the tunnel: Ako and Nobuo. But salvation from this bloody carnage is far from their grasp. As they try to dig out from the wreck in order to come up with a plan to stay alive, the lack of light and food, combined with the stench of death and decay, will lead one member of the group down a dark and demented path. And with sudden, violent earthquakes shaking the tunnel, escaping to the outside world may lead them to an even greater danger...
